My studio is right here, deep in the mean unforgiving streets of Lochgoilhead. A small village in Argyll in the West of Scotland.
I’ve not always made furniture but I think I always wanted to. I spent a lot of years doing joinery & carpentry work on building sites, in peoples houses and wherever else I could do it to make some money. It all went well and then I ended up with all these employees and an actual business. That’ll wear you out, man. I was at that stage where you’re constantly working, your hair is greying too quick and your kids are growing up even quicker? Too busy, too much nonsense going on and not enough making what I wanted. After spending a year or so wondering how I could slow down a bit and take it easy, still doing my woodworking stuff, I eventually stopped work for a bit and we done some travelling. I got to know my wife and boys again. I was shit at surfing!
When we got back to the motherland I needed some money and I needed to work. I set up a small woodworking studio. I really only wanted to make stuff that I liked, stuff that’s made with nice materials and built to last. That was the idea and since then it’s been going not too badly. Designing and building my own furniture to taking on commissions for whoever likes my stuff. It’s not a bad way to spend your time.
Who knows were it goes, the journey’s exciting and I'm still wondering how I'm managing to make a living doing what I do.
It’s a weird world, man.
