A Handmade Kitchen

Been working through this kitchen in my house, that’s why it’s taking so long. Gemma’s pretty patient, she knows I’m not in a rush. She wishes I was slower at other things. The things I’m really fast at I would prefer I was slower and the stuff I’m really slow at I wish I was fast at. In an ideal world I’d be rich and a lasting lover. But in reality I’m poor and a disappointment. Ask Gemma.

Got the marble fitted, picked it up at a place in Govan called Marble Direct. Good lads. This is a leftover cutting from the marble they done in the Gleneagles hotel. We looked at Calcatta quartz stuff and some other stuff but the real marble is what we were looking for. We like how dramatic the veins are in it. Dramatic. Listen to me.

We’ll start the opposite side in the next couple of weeks. I just cut these box joints on the oak drawers by hand because I like how they’re not all exactly the same size. Don’t know why, I just like it stuff that looks like that.

We got these handles from a place called PLANK Hardware. We used them because they were the cheapest option. I use different handles all the time and I’m still amazed at the cost. These are good quality and I can’t see a difference from one of the expensive companies that spend a lot on the marketing. Marketing is powerful, man. I dont’ get it. I say that as I write this on an iMac while listening to something on an iphone. I’m just as much as an idiot. But these handles are good.

The skirting still has to go on this. I need to get the floor done first. We’ll get there.

We went for oak internals and you’re normal blum door hinge. I like a butt hinge that you can see from the outside but Gemma wasn’t into them. I need to move on with the times.

I done oak drawers with blum undermount runners. I didn’t do doevetails on the drawers because I’d have been doing them with the jig, for time, and I’d have known it was done on the jog, everyone can use the jig, they don’t do anything for me. Sometimes I can’t believe I’ve gave energy to thinking about dovetails or no dovetails. That’s weird.

For the cutlery drawer I’ve done a wee sliding thing on the top, I’m not a fan of deep drawers, thin drawers are the way to keep organised. It just slides side to side, nothing fancy but it works. I don’t like fancy stuff, I just like stuff that works and stuff that’ll last.

On the island we’ve got two big drawers for pots n pans. Same oak internals. I use the big square one for hitting people with.

Gemma bakes a lot. She’s a “master baker”

You can see a bit of the moulding on the top drawer that could be doing with a bit sanded out. The painting department didn’t bother. They just charged on. Doesn’t bother me but I can see it.

Thats all the pictures I’ve got for now. I shall update as we go on and I’m hoping to get it done before the world ends.

Just for the people searching google I need to add some words and phrases. This is my marketing strategy. I apologise for how brazen it is. Vulgar.

This is a handmade kitchen in Argyll, but can be done for Glasgow or Edinburgh or really anywhere. All handmade in Argyll, a bespoke kitchen, a hardwood face frame kitchen with inset doors and oak cabinets.
