Books that a joiner in the Scottish wilderness reads...
/This has nothing to do with woodwork or anything like that. But I like books and I used to post a lot of wood/building books. I ended up getting messages from other joiners/builders who were into the same stuff so I sometimes post books that they might like. Also this is my website and I can do what I want. Finally, some control :)
It’ll also be funny when I’m long gone and this website is floating about the metaverse. Generations of the McKinlay’s will wonder what a book was and how did this guy Neil manage to actually make a living and raise a family with his nonsense.
Here’s some books I read 2022. I had some time off with the accident so I had more time. I’m not sure I read more than this amount of books in a year.
Good
I think Death of a Salesman is meant for people who work too much. And I like anything Joan Didion done.
I' like John Fante, next to Bukowski he’s my favourite writer. I like LA writers. The space of time when LA was being built up and people were heading there is pretty fascinating, to me, anyway. But Dan Fante is his son. It’s pretty good, I enjoyed it. And Timothy Leary’s Timothy Leary. His Life experience is very very different from a joiner in Lochgoilhead.
Crafting the Considerate House is something we should all try and do. There’s a lot of stuff being built that’s unnecessary, over the top and doesn’t seem to fit in nice. Maybe I’m wrong ad we need to keep building monstrosities. Hunger is quite rough.
Budd Schulberg has two books that I know of. It’s around about the early days of Hollywood. Again, I quite like the history of that sort of time. And Joan Didion’s always good.
John Fante’s great. And I like Dave Trott, I like to read something on marketing or whatever, working for yourself nowadays is mental. There’s so much shit out there and I like to know when I’m being sold to. Everything seems like an ad now. I don’t like it. But the books got some great stories in it.
Just finished this. East of Eden. I related to Samuel Hamilton. When I read this I thought they meant me…
I wouldn’t say that other men used my tricks to get rich, but the rest is pretty accurate.
Also, one last thing I read in East of Eden and liked was this part…
Happened way back then just like it’s happening now. I’ve just accepted the fact that people like to moan when things aren’t going their way. Myself included, but I’m trying.
Thanks, and remember if you’re looking for anything construction to furniture you can Get In Touch
